Waste collectors in North Tipperary are now accepting even more items in their door-to-door recycling collections, so householders have no excuses when it comes to slimming the bin!
In addition to plastic bottles (drinks, milk etc), householders availing of door-to-door recycling collections can now recycle most types of plastics, including butter and yogurt cartons, plastic trays and soft plastic packaging such as bags and food packaging. It is essential that all items are clean, otherwise the whole load becomes contaminated and will have to be landfilled.
"It's great news for householders that even more items can go in the recycling bin or bag",
says Áine Mc Carthy, Environmental Awareness with North Tipperary County Council,
"however we would still encourage householders to think before doing the weekly shop and try to keep plastic packaging to a minimum so that we can continue to reduce the amount of waste we produce."
In addition to plastics, your local waste collector also accepts tetrapak cartons (milk, juice, soup etc), food cans, drinks cans, paper, magazines, cardboard and junk mail. Again all items should be clean and dry to avoid contamination. Glass cans be recycled at one of 39 bottle banks throughout North Tipperary.
The recycling centres at Nenagh and Ballaghveny accept a range of items, from batteries to electrical goods. You can bring your clean plastic containers to the Recycling Centres, only if it has a number 1 or 2 symbol in the triangle at the bottom of the container, so always check before you go. Batteries can be recycled at all Council offices and through many North Tipp schools.
If in any doubt about recycling, it's always better to check first with your local waste collector or County Council Environment Section on (067) 44786.
