Irish Driving Licences
To
apply for a Full Licence you will need :
- Completed Application Form D.401
- Two identical Photographs (signed on the back)
- Last Licence (if this is not available you will need to
submit a lost licence declaration form stamped at the Garda Station)
- The Appropriate Fee of €15
for a three year licence or €25 for a 10 year licence
- Certificate of Competency if converting from a Provisional/Learner
Permit
to a Full licence.
- Medical report for :
- categories C1, C, D1, D, EC1, EC, ED1, ED
- any applicant aged 70 years and over.
- if applicant suffers from any of the medical
conditions detailed on application form
To apply for a 1st Learner Permit you will need :
- Completed Application Form D.201
- A Birth Certificate or Passport
- Marriage Certificate (if appropriate)
- An eyesight report Form D.502 for classes A, A1, B, EB and
W - eyesight report valid for one month from issue
- A medical report Form D.501 for classes C, C1, D, D1, EC,
EC1, ED and ED1 or if applicant suffers from any of the medical conditions
detailed on application form
- Two identical Photographs (signed on the back)
- Fee for 2 years - €15
- Driver Theory Test
To apply for a 2nd Learner Permit you will need :
- Completed Application Form D.201
- Two identical Photographs (signed on the back)
- Old Licence/Last Licence (if previous licence is unavailable,
a lost licence declaration stamped at the Garda Station is required.)
- Fee of €15
To apply for a 3rd or
Subsequent Learner Permit you will need :
- Completed Application Form D.201
- Two Photographs (signed on the back)
- Evidence that you have completed & failed
a driving test in the last two years preceding date of application in
respect of the vehicle category being applied for.
- Old Licence or lost licence declaration form
- Fee of €15
If you have not sat a test in the last two years
you must submit :
Acknowledgement letter from Driver Test Section, Road Safety Authority,
Moy Valley Business Park, Primrose Hill, Dublin Road, Ballina, Co. Mayo (1 890 406040) confirming that a test has been applied
for, or a test appointment letter.
In this case a 1 year licence will be granted.

Exchange
of Driving Licence:
- Full licence from other country (see list of exchange countries
below).
- Full licence application form D.401
- Exchange of Drivers Licence form D.900

- retention of higher categories
- if applicant is over 70 years old or
- if applicant suffers from any of the illnesses
listed on the application form.
